IT is an American supernatural Horror novel by Stephen King. It has been adapted into a TV series and multiple films.
The story is about seven people who come together within the small (and fictional) town of Derry, Maine in order to fight a supernatural and powerful evil that feasts on fear. First, they fight It as children, and then when It comes again - as It always does, ever twenty-six or so years - they fight It again as adults.
Canon
Book
The book was published on 15 September 1986, written by Stephen King.
"To the children, the town was their whole world. To the adults, knowing better, Derry, Maine, was just their home town: familiar, well-ordered, a good place to live. It was the children who saw-and felt-what made Derry so horribly different. In the stormdrains, in the sewers, It lurked, taking on the shape of every nightmare, each person's deepest dread. Sometimes It reached up, seizing, tearing, killing...
The adults, knowing better, knew nothing. Time passed and the children grew up, moved away. The horror of It was deep-buried, wrapped in forgetfulness. Until the grown-up children were called back, once more to confront It as It stirred and coiled in the sullen depths of their memories, reaching up again to make their past nightmares a terrible present reality."- King, Stephen (1986). IT. Back cover: Scribner.
Film
IT
IT, like its sequel, was directed by Andrés Muschietti. Released in 2017, the first film of the pair focused on The Losers Club as young teens. It differs from both the book, and mini-series as it was set in 1989. Although slightly modernized, most of the character relationships remain the same, at heart. Some adult content was left out, however, in transition from book to screen. Many fears manifested differently than in book canon, too.
Main Cast
IT: Chapter Two
Chapter Two, released in 2019, focused mainly on The Losers Club as adults, but scattered in flashbacks of them as young teens. This part of the film pair, is where most obvious differences from the book appear. Occupations were altered, how certain relationships concluded were changed, and most notably, Richie Tozier was made canonically gay. An important step for the LGBT+ community within the fandom.
Main Cast
Chapter Two had the same cast, with a few additions:
Television Mini-Series
Titled Stephen King's IT, and directed by Tommy Lee Wallace, the mini-series had two episodes. Shown in 1990, adult content was severely edited out of the story so that it could be played on television.

Fandom
Most of the fandom is based on the reboot films, IT and IT: Chapter Two. Their focus is usually on The Losers Club, the group of children-turned-adults that the story follows, although there is a part of the fandom that focuses on Pennywise the Dancing Clown. The fandom became very active and started producing more Fanworks after the release of the 2017 movie. According to Tumblr Fandometrics' Year in Review 2017, IT was the 5th most popular movie of the year. In 2019, IT: Chapter Two was the 6th most popular.

Shipping
The most popular ship in the fandom is by far Reddie, which is implied in the book and semi-canon in the new movies. The most popular het ship is Benverly, which is canon in all versions of the story. The fandom doesn't have many femslash ships, although sometimes Beverly is shipped in fanfics with an OFC. The Losers Club is the most popular gen grouping of the protagonists.

- Character Design: Fanartists may draw from multiple sources in interpreting the appearances of characters. Some include a spliced blond!Eddie which is a combination of the 1990s mini-series and the Muschietti versions of Eddie - essentially Jack Dylan Grazer's Eddie with blond hair, like Adam Faraizl sported. While others focus entirely on that of the book descriptions, or more singular representations of the film versions, as it is for most of the other characters. There are some spliced versions of Richie, as well, featuring wild/curly, red hair. And there are iterations of Bill as bald, though most tend to draw within the realm of the Muschietti representation of the character. Before the cast of IT Chapter 2 was confirmed, the designs of characters as adults was generally based on the appearances of the actors who played them as children.
